HM Revenue & Customs has recently announced it will examine the accounting records of an additional 50,000 small businesses each year, so never before has accurate record keeping been so important.
Depending on the size of your business, we prepare and maintain your “accounting records” using appropriate business software such as Quickbooks, SAGE or (in the more simple organisations) Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
VAT, despite being simple in concept, is actually a very complex tax with many traps for the unwary and significant penalties for those who get it wrong. VAT returns must now be completed online, and because of this many businesses prefer us to prepare their regular VAT returns. We also advise on the suitability of the various different VAT schemes such as the Flat Rate Scheme, cash accounting and the various retail schemes.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) will apply to all business with turnover greater than the VAT threshold (£85,000) and is mandatory for VAT periods commencing on or after 1 April 2019. This will mean that the existing submission of VAT data via the HMRC website will no longer be available and you will instead have to submit your VAT data via HMRC approved third party software with key information in digital form. Where you have existing software which is HMRC approved for MTD we can advise you on how you may implement MTD through this or we can assist you in the purchase of such software (we have favourable rates available with certain suppliers). Alternatively, if you prefer to adapt your current processes, we can review these and set up the digital links to your spreadsheets and submit your data via our bridging software. Even where you have previously used manual records we can help you set up spreadsheets or can even prepare these for you so you can meet the requirements.
Taking on employees can be very time consuming from an administrative point of view. We can minimise this by dealing with your payroll administration. We will prepare your wage calculations, providing a payroll summary and individual payslips for each employee. We calculate and track SSP, SMP, SPP and holiday pay, prepare P45s, arrange online payment of PAYE tax and wages and complete the employer end of year returns (P35s). All payroll returns must now be made online.
